Icon Adventures exists simply to provide inspirational, enjoyable painting pilgrimages for small groups to sacred places – which is usually where the best art is!

Begun in 2010 by professional iconographer Helen McIldowie-Jenkins, Icon Adventures was born out of many travel adventures to study icons and sacred art in their original locations and to seek the spirit of place which inspired that art.

The itineraries are designed to offer an all-round experience of producing a specific devotional work of art (using time-honoured techniques and high quality traditional materials) whilst contemplatively immersed in the loca sacra, art history, culture and enjoying the surrounding natural beauty with a few other like-minded people.

The trips are organised to give the best possible guidance, tuition and support from start to finish. Each of the sites visited and all the hotel/guesthouse accommodation and transfers have all been assessed and are reviewed for quality and compliance with responsible tourism.

Helen is on hand to give as much individual tuition as possible and will lead the group pilgrimages and site visits. Helen has taught art and icon painting to small group for nearly 20 years and brings to it her experience of writing icons to commission for individuals, churches, abbeys, cathedrals in the UK and the US. Helen has a 1st class BA in the History of Art and an MA in Early Italian Art from the Courtauld Institute, London (where she was the Edmond J. Safra Scholar).
